Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

WintergirlsGoodreads Summary:
Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.
In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the multiple-award-winning Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia’s descent into the powerful vortex of anorexia, and her painful path toward recovery.

LONG STORY SHORT:

This is a book on a very difficult topic which makes it very difficult for me to write a review for it. I have to say I didn't love Wintergirls. Of course, it's not possible to enjoy a book like that but I also didn't love the way the topic was presented. I would say you can read it and you will probably be satisfied and many people liked it quite a lot, but I hope to find a book that tackles the topic of anorexia a bit better than this one did.

REVIEW:

I won this book in a Giveaway, but I could  choose which one I wanted to receive and I decided it should be Wintergirls because I've heard so much praise for Laurie Halse Anderson and especially this book that I wanted to check it out.

I have to say I was disappointed. I mean I raced through Wintergirls in one setting but that was more because I wanted to know how everything would turn out. You know, like you stay in the hospital to find out if your friend is recovering. I didn't read it in one sitting because of the writing style or the plot or the characters or anything, really.

As far as the characters go - yes, they are realistic. That's what I'm always looking for in characters - usually. But I just didn't warm up to Lia - not one bit. She was a stranger to me until the end. The fact that we got to know about her past in flashbacks did not change that. I mean, it showed me how the eating disorder evolved, how she got into the mess she found herself in. But I didn't know Lia as a person. She always seemed to be driving around with her car, without any reason.

That made the plot a fail for me, too. It was already very slow, not much happening, many thoughts. But then there were the flashbacks thrown in too and while I found some of those very important - some also were completely pointless.

When she started seeing Cassie it was too much for me. I felt like there were too many issues Lia had to face to put into one book and some things were clearly missing for me.

And then there was that guy. One word: weird.

All in all, I think this book was okay but I was hoping for a lot more. I thought I'd cry or maybe at least be so involved in the story, feel sorry for Lia, but  Wintergirls just didn't affect me the way I expected it would.

Motivational Monday

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

“If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything.”

MOTIVATIONAL MOVE:

Seriously guys? Try doing Yoga! I'll admit it feels a bit weird at first jumping around in front of the laptop trying to do those weird poses...BUT it at least leaves the impression of being more relaxed and calm :) Also, if you're lucky and (unlike me) have a yoga studio close to you - you should try it out! I'm kind of obsessed with this kind of stuff right now...

MOTIVATIONAL GOAL:

I know this is probably set too high but I really want to write the reviews for all the books I read in October until the end of this week....I#ll probably try to squeeze in one per day...

Words of the Week

A little late, but it's coming :) Sorry everything is so messed up right now...

MY LIFE

My Phone - came back to me. Bummer! I had the perfect excuse to start saving up for an Iphone!

New - apartment as you guys probably already know...I moved the weekend before this and even though it's only a ten minute walk from my old home I feel so weird! After all, I've lived in that house for twelve years (which is quite a long time when you're seventeen!)

Math - is not my best subject. We're having a super important exam on Wednesday and I'm going to fail big time - I'm desperate...

BOOKS

Beastly - totally surprised me! Never thought I'd love it so much!
Crossed - totally has me in already...the pacing is just unbeatable!
Code Name Verity - is the next book I consider to read...it's set in the time that my next history exam is going to be about :D

This is everything for now. I'm crazy busy trying to keep up with my reviews and posts for the next week *wiping the sweat off my forehead*

Still no new books, by the way...although I'll probably stop my bookbuying ban.

I'm Back (again...)

-but for good this time! Hopefully!

So...I waited.
Patiently.
I never complained.
I never begged my mom to finally call that Internet guy.
I did not throw tantrums.
No, I behaved like the responsible, kind, adult person that I usually never am or pretend to be...or ever will be.
Because that was the only way to get back to you guys. To my blog, to my reviews, to all the craziness that makes my life so much better :D
To cut it short, though. The Internet guy just came to our new apartment and now I can spend hours in front of my netbook again. Ahhhh....life is good!

Anyway...there's a lot to catch up on so why don't I start with the books I've read this month?

The Casual VacancyHeartless (Pretty Little Liars, #7)Beautiful Chaos (Caster Chronicles, #3)Enclave (Razorland, #1)Born Wicked (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, #1)Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy, #1)All These Things I've Done (Birthright, #1)

Detailed information is going to follow in my (not yet typed) reviews, but overall it's been a pretty good month. Except from Enclave and Sweet Evil I really enjoyed all of these books!

Now, on to the books I want to read in November:

Beastly (Kendra Chronicles #1)Gone (Gone, #1)Reached (Matched, #3)Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1)Entice (The Violet Eden Chapters #2)Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)Rot & Ruin (Benny Imura, #1)Crossed (Matched, #2)

Wow...some of them are quite thick...bur November is the perfect reading month :)
What are you guys reading right now? And what have I missed this past week?
Greetings,
the Booksmartie

(Dusty) Skeletons on my Bookshelf....

{This Girl Reads}

Supposedly, everyone has a few skeletons in their closet—I think everyone has a few on their bookshelves, too. Today feature five books you've owned for a long time but never read.

Ohh...this one is easy! When I buy books I always buy a huge pile of them (I usually order them online) and that leads to LOTS of dust before I get to that book I just had to have immediately almost one year ago... ;)
Consider this a sneak-peak on all the books to be featured on this blog...within the next decade...

Which books are collecting dust on your shelves? And which of these do you think I should read first?

Haunted Week - Bats in Your Book Pages

{This Girl Reads}

Even the biggest book enthusiasts have some bats in their belfries about things in books that drive them insane. Today tell your readers about five things that drive you crazy in books.

 Insta - Love
It drives me nuts. Honestly.

Stereotypical Paranormal Romances
I hate superhero, snarky, sarcastic, paranormal boyfriends. I HATE when they think they need to protect their whiny girlfriends. I HATE when they can't be together because blaaaaah.... but they ARE together because they can't live/breathe/think straight without each other. Why can't they just go off and fight some kick-ass battles instead???

3. Wink, Wink, WINKS
You know that when you're reading a book and everything is fine and all of a sudden one character starts laying out his/her entire life story/philosophy in front of you and you're like wow...woah - would you just slow down? It works pretty much like this:
And then I realized I could not give up. I had to follow my dreams. All my life I had (blah....) but that was only because my mom was (blah...) and I never noticed that (blah...) until now and I was (insert detailed analysis of own self here).
Sometimes I'd like to visit authors who do this, pad them on the shoulder and say: It's alright. Just let your character be and I promise you I'll be smart enough to figure out his/her motives all on my own!

The Coolest Characters in the world
This is another specialty in many Paranormal Romances and I a at a point where it doesn't even annoy me anymore. I only find it funny. Just imagine someone tells you you're an angel/part angel/werewolf/vampire/any other paranormal creature. Of course, you would believe them the second he or she says it, right? You wouldn't question the existence of paranormal beings in our world, right? As the perfect girlfriend/boyfriend the first thing coming to your mind would be: Damn, that's annoying! Totally ruins the plans I had! But I can a least stay with my high school crush, right? Pretty, pretty please?

The desire to be someone else
Sometimes some authors seem to try to imitate their idols. I do get that. I'd probably do the exact same thing. BUT I believe that anyone's story - and especially voice - sounds a lot better than the voice of someone who copies the voice of someone else. I really don't like that, either.

Now, let's make this a rant fest - what do you hate in books?
