Motivational Monday

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”

MOTIVATIONAL MOVE:
Honestly? I'm so stressed out right now (it's school again...), I crave (and I recommend it to every one of you) a hot shower and a face mask and new hand cream and all that beauty stuff to really forget about all the craziness .... at least for a moment.

MOTIVATIONAL GOAL:
I really want to get into the christmas vibe this year, so this week I'm going to start "planning" for it. I'm going to look for christmas books I want to (re)read in december and make a goal list i.e. to make sure to bake cookies this year and to buy a cd with christmas songs :)

This weeks new books:

Undeadly (The Reaper Diaries, #1)Elemental

Not many this week - and I'm not exactly excited about either of them...I might read Elemental one day, but actually probably not - can you guys recommend one of these?

Words of the Week

MY LIFE:

I'll admit it - there was not a lot going on in my life this past week. BUT...there was a giant bookhaul :D So that's what I'm going to dedicate this post to:

Vampire Academy Box Set (Vampire Academy, #1-4)

I finally got the VA box set - I've been waiting to by it forever and now I can finally dig into this world again :D

Beautiful Redemption (Caster Chronicles, #4)

I can't WAIT to find out what's up with Ethan - oh my!

Fire (Graceling Realm, #2)

Still haven't read Graceling...but...you know...

Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, #1)

I heard nothing but good things about this series!

Nevermore (Nevermore, #1)

I know I shouldn't uy paranormal romance books (because, you know, I usually hate them after the first two pages) but everyone seems to love this one!

Between Here and Forever

Because I can never get enough contemporary books...

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1)

Again, as far as I know this is considered a must-read for every YA fan :D

Soo...that's it for this week (and the following ones, I guess). Have you guys read any of these? If so, how did you like them?

I hope you have a great Sunday,
the Booksmartie

Review: Eve by Anna Carey

Eve (Eve, #1)

The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life

Release Date: October 4, 2011
Pages: 336
Series? #1
Publisher: Harper Teen

Other books in the series:
Once (Eve, #2)Rise (Eve, #3)

LONG STORY SHORT:
Eve is a super quick dystopian read that you should pick up whenever you want something light but aren't in the mood for contemporary of that obviously light kind. Whenever you want a good story to keep you entertained but not one that you need to do three hours of research for until you even understand the plot. I think everyone but hardcore dystopian fans will enjoy this book.

REVIEW:
I wasn't really in the mood for Eve. I'd heard so many people saying it was just average and you wouldn't really miss out if you didn't read it so in my head there was a big fat BLAH.

I think it was the boarding school that got me in the end. I can't help it. I',m  a sucker for boarding schools. And even though Eve is about to finish school at the beginning of this book, I always need something to get me through the first few pages and the boarding school effect definitely did that for me. After those few pages I didn't need anything to keep reading. There was a lot happening in the beginning and I kept turning the pages like crazy. I think the mix of an easy, flowing writing style and the bunch of action that takes place in Eve make the story so addicting.
I mean there was definitely something missing. Like background information. Or civilisation. Honestly, we pretty much spend the whole book wandering around in the middle of nowhere which usually bores me to death.
I recently heard someone saying Eve changed her mind too quickly and I will agree with that. It was like one moment she lived in that world of hers where she believed everything the teachers said and the next she ran away from them convinced they were evil. Kind of unrealistic.
Apart from that, though, I just liked the novel. The romance is cute - no one can argue with that. For a second there was a semi love triangle which was the most annoying and unnecessary thing I've read about in a while but thank God it didn't last long and I could forget about it pretty fast.
The ending of Eve was only weird in retrospect. It's the kind of cliffhanger that doesn't keep you on the edge of your seat (and annoyed) but simply an outlook on how the next book will continue.
In some ways Eve was like a sequel - the plot seemed to build up to something that didn't happen in the first book, there was no grand finale but the many action-packed scenes that made my heart beat faster and ended quite emotionally sometimes made up for that.

All in all, you should not expect an epic dystopian novel with Eve, you should be ready to read a book that is really entertaining if you close one or two eyes at some points.

Review: Defiance by C.J Redwine

Defiance (Defiance, #1)
Goodreads Summary:
Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city's brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father's apprentice, Logan--the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same one who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but a fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.
At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city's top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor's impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared. As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

Release Date: August 28, 2012
Pages: 403 (Hardcover)
Series? #1 (Defiance Series)
Publisher: Balzer + Bray

LONG STORY SHORT:

Good, but not overwhelming, I expected way more from this one. The writing style was out of this world, and the plot was constantly fooling with me BUT it didn't grab me, didn't capture me. It took me forever to get through this book because I couldn't even make myself care for the outcome all that much.

REVIEW:

I don't get all the hype around this book. Everyone seemed so obsessed with it, I thought this would be my new favorite this year...and it wasn't, really. It wasn't bad , either. I guess I would've been amazed if this was an unknown book. The writing style was REALLY good and emotional, the author knows how to transform the characters' feelings to the reader.

Rachel seemed realistic to me at first. She started off as that kick-ass, daddy's girl you just have to like somehow. And her stubborn attitude towards Logan was..amusing. But then she started being unreasonable. And silly, even. There were so many times she risked her LIFE to voice her opinion on something completely ridiculous and unimportant. That really got on my nerves. It was like she wasn't able to THINK! Or survive, that is. All because of her temper which I found to be extremely unrealistic.

Logan was a lot better in that way. Then again, he was thinking a bit too much for me. Weird how he always knew EVERYTHING. And had all the things planned out and somehow he was so protective and nice and good and....it was a bit too much for me.

The plot, yes, was intriguing, but there were some things I didn't like about that, either. For example, the author never really kept you guessing. The characters had certain plans - that the reader knew about - and then those plans were rearranged or given up on. That's what I called plot twists in the beginning of this review. Mhm, but a real twist for me is when I'm convinced something will happen and than BOOM it doesn't. You know what I mean?

Oh well. So Defiance was not the book for me. Without all the hype and my high expectations, though, I might have enjoyed it more because Redwine's writing style was really good and the storyline differs a lot from those of other fantasy reads.

Desperately Wanting Wednesday

6678961827 53a3b81485 o Desperately Wanting Wednesday: End of the World

This week, we're sharing End of the World books we can't wait to get our hands on :)

Gone (Gone, #1)

In the blink of an eye. Everyone disappears. GONE.
Except for the young. Teens. Middle schoolers. Toddlers. But not one single adult. No teachers, no cops, no doctors, no parents. Just as suddenly, there are no phones, no internet, no television. No way to get help. And no way to figure out what's happened.
Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents--unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers--that grow stronger by the day.
It's a terrifying new world. Sides are being chosen, a fight is shaping up. Townies against rich kids. Bullies against the weak. Powerful against powerless. And time is running out: On your birthday, you disappear just like everyone else...

Okay, so this is not technically an End of the World book. But I mean it kind of is the beginning of a new world so that means the old one has come to an end, right? Right? Whatever. I just really want to read this book :D

Motivational Monday

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

“A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.”
― Steve Martin

MOTIVATIONAL MOVE:

You guys know the website/TV show Hungry Girl? Because I'm obsessed with it! I especially love this recipe where you put cut up apples in a mug and heat them in a microwave. I love to put sweetened yogurt and cinnamon over it - you should try that, too! It's perfect for the fall time!

MOTIVATIONAL GOAL:

Read those four books this week. I mean, come on - I can do it!!!!
(By the way I did work on reaching my goal of writing all the reviews last week. There's still two more to go, but I managed to type five so...I guess that's a good result!)

And now this week's new treats....

All New Stories:

FlawedMeant to BeMiss Fortune CookieMy Beautiful FailureLuminosity (The Raven Chronicles, #1)Black City (Black City, #1)

Sequels:
Reached (Matched, #3)Echo (Soul Seekers, #2)

Reached, of course!!! I loved Matched and Crossed and can't wait for the last installment in the trilogy! Miss Fortune Cookie sounds like exactly the kind of contemporary I love PLUS it's the MC is a blogger so - must-have for me, too. Lastly Black City and Flawed do sound good, but I don't think I will buy them anytime soon...gotta keep the balance a bit :)
