Bout of Books Wrap-Up Post

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

Hey guys! If you follow me on Twitter, you probably already know: I failed. BIG time! I mean, it's not like I haven't tried. I tried really hard, even. And I would have made it. But first, there was school. I had a TON of homework this week and I just couldn't keep track anymore. I started with Clockwork Angel and I think there were like 120 pages missing that I thought I'd read Friday night. That didn't happen. Why? Because stupid me forgot that stupid book at school. Which meant I couldn't possibly finish it until Sunday night. And that meant that I couldn't start reading Clockwork Prince as I wanted to and that again leaves me without any motivation...

Anyway, I started reading Shadowhunters and Downworlders, but I already knew I wouldn't be able to finish that book until the end of Bout of Books, either

Number of Books I wanted to read:3
Number of Books I actually read: 0

Other goals I have accomplished: Participated in two Twitter Chats :D

Final Thoughts:

After all it was worth it! Once again, I feel like my relationship with Twitter improved...I didn't completely forget the existence of that site as I usually do, so...that's great, right? Also, the Twitter Chats were SO much fun - that makes up for my rather - um - nonexistent reading progress :)

Words of the Week

Yay, guys! Now that my Winter break is over and everything's getting back to normal, so is this blog and so are the Words of the Week! They have been modified a bit over the past three weeks but I hope you still like this little weekly wrap - up of my week in general and - of course - my week in books!

MY LIFE:

YAY of the Week

The weekend!!! I can't even decide between Saturday - when I went for a 13 kilometer run and enjoyed every single minute of it or Sunday when I went swimming with my stepdad and my little brother...it was the big dose of fun family time I needed after the first super busy week back to school!

NAY of the Week

Very clear - school! I'm going to take the most important exams of my life (so far) at the end of March and I'm done with the German equivalent to Highschool by then...which is SO frightening. Even all the teachers seem nervous and school is nothing but a big, fat bump on the road, decorated with a ton of homework and a lack of free time.

MY BOOKS:

Soo...I haven't read a book this week. Weird, right? SO weird, I can tell you. That hasn't happened in a while. And I took part in Bout of Books - a Read-a-thon! But it wasn't meant to happen. I started Clockwork Angel and I could have finished it Friday night, but then I left it at school. Yup, forgot it in my Spanish classroom. I can't believe it, either. So, then I started reading Shadowhunters and Downworlders, but there was not much motivation left. I also started the first few pages of Vortex by Julie Cross, but didn't find the time to continue that, either. Let's just say this past week was an epic fail BUT - the good thing is that it's over. And next week is going to be better...I hope.

By the way, I finally ordered some books at Amazon which arrived this week:

Vortex (Tempest, #2)Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky, #2)

Review: Thrall by Jennifer Quintenz

Little side note. i read tis book past summer and thought I had already posted the review - now i realized, i haven't. I'm so, so sorry for that - especially because I received the e-copy from the author herself :/

Thrall (Daughters Of Lilith, #1)

Goodreads synopsis:
Braedyn is a normal girl just trying to survive high school with her two devoted friends, Royal and Cassie. Together they’re doing a pretty good job of shrugging off the slings and arrows cast their way by the popular crowd when a new boy, Lucas, moves into the house next door. Suddenly Braedyn finds herself falling in love for the first time.

But as her sixteenth birthday approaches, Braedyn discovers humankind is at war with the Lilitu, an ancient race of enticing demons that prey on human souls. Her father is a member of the Guard fighting against the Lilitu - and so are the new neighbors, including her crush, Lucas.
As her world starts to unravel at the seams, Braedyn learns the right answers aren’t always clear or easy. And as for “good” and “evil” – it all depends on how we choose to act. Inspired by the ancient Mesopotamian myths of Lilith and her offspring, Thrall explores first love, strong friendships, and taking on adult responsibilities against the backdrop of powerful supernatural forces and life-and-death stakes.

REVIEW:

No fan of Paranormal Romance? Totally fed up with insta-love, whiny femtale characters who seem to die over the fact that loving some weird paranormal creature might end with their early deaths, even though they really, really can't even breathe without said creature?
Well, Thrall is the book for you. And thankfully also, the book for everyone who loves to read what I described above.

I normally try to tiptoe my way around Paranormal Romance. I didn't love Twilight, Hush Hush, Evernight - you name it. I decided to read Thrall because the premise sounded so fantastically good and I was curious about the kind of paranormal being we have to deal with: the Lilitu.

I liked Thrall from the beginning. It started at a school dance and we see Breadyn as a totally normal high school girl, but a few pages, in the first weird incident happens and from pretty much then on I was constantly wondering how things would go on and why this and that happened.

Its fast pace is one of the best elements of Thrall. Honestly, you can't put it down and take a breath, because there were happening dangerous things all the time! And the author managed to set up a cliffhanger at the end of almost every chapter.

Thrall also scored big on the romance part. True, Lucas (did you notice how many love interests are named Lucas lately???) and Braedyn could have taken it a bit slower especially because they weren't even allowed to be together, but the book is rather short, so I can forgive how fast their romance developed. Anyway, the point is, even though they started falling for each other life didn't stop there. Oh no, the action went on, even picked up on pace and Anna was never once the whiny helpless accessory of the oh-so-strong love interest. I loved how they were both capable to save their own lives (most of the time).

Okay, before this review gets too long I need to add one or two things I didn't like as much:
Especially in the beginning I found that the author rushed the dialogue and the emotions of everyone a bit. I think Anna accepted what she was too fast and her dad suddenly held a whole monologue on how she was still the same person she was a day ago and then Lucas gets way emotional, too and everything is dealt with so fast. What I want to say is, the dialogue sometimes felt stiff and set up. The other thing: I hate long epilogues. And the epilogue in Thrall was very long and very much like an enumeration of how things continued in the book. I didn't like that.

All in all, Thrall was a great book - which is particularly awesome because normally I don't like Paranormal Romance at all!!

What I Thought About...Tempest by Julie Cross

Tempest

by Julie Cross

Tempest (Tempest, #1)

Hardcover, 1st Edition, 352 pages
Published January 17th 2012 by St. Martin's Griffin

Other works by this author:

Tomorrow is Today (Tempest, #0.5)Vortex (Tempest, #2)

A Long Story...Short!

This book has something for everyone. It's got the paranormal aspect with the time travelling, but it has sci-fi as well as action and mystery in it. The plot comes with a ton of twists and turns and action and the background story and information we get as readers does not lack a thing. At the end of the book everything that happened is crystal clear and still does not appear unrealistic. We are left with a cliffhanger, that's good but not annoying. Almost a perfect book, I would say. The only thing I missed  was characterisation. The main and side characters all seemed a bit stereotypical and flat and didn't develop at all throughout the book, but in contrast to the rest, I could easily forgive and forget this aspect.

Rating: 3/3 Smarties

Review for You:

Tempest was probably the most entertaining novel I have read in a  long time. I am sooo mad at myself for letting it collect dust on my shelf for almost a year. As I mentioned above there was only one thing that seperated this novel from perfection: the characters. During the first few pages, I thought Jackson would be a really unique character with a voice that fit him and displayed how he looked on the inside. Well...that was over pretty soon. Jackson does not stay as funny as he seems to be in the beginning, he loses his uniqueness and does not gain it back until the end of the book. He is a nice guy, yes, but he is also very much like most male YA characters. Also, I wished so much to feel some chemistry between Jackson and Holly and that didn't happen, sadly. They had a lot potential as a couple.
Enough of that. Let's talk about the awesomeness of this book. The plot was fantastic. Very well thought-out. So many things happened and they were just thrown in your face as the novel went on. While the first half was more on the entertaining, funny side ( and sometimes, I'll admit it, a bit dragging), the second one was full of action and mystery to solve, which I loved. Sometimes I had to read a page twice to understand that this. actually. really. just. happened! But the explanations were always good and believable, and very futuristic and sci-fi. Oh, how I loved this novel! Also, as a last thought: I can recommend this book for boys, too. It' s not very cheesy, but comes with a nice 007- element...

Review for me:

Favorite Quote: It was kind of heart to find a quote in this book. As I said it was rather entertaining and fun than emotional and quoteworthy..anyway, here's what I came up with:
"But doing the right thing is hard sometimes. The more practise you have, the easier it gets."

What I learned from this book:
Um...kind of difficult. I learned once again, what a Sci-Fi geek I can be when handed the right book.

What I want to remember from this book: That a novel with time travel is always, always worth a read- NO prejudice  allowed!

When I want to reread this book: When Tempest #3 comes out, when I just read a book that really sucked and I need to remind myself why I love reading in the first place. To get over a reading slump.

Wishlist Wednesday

Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky, #2)

It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.
Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night
In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable

Yup, you got that right. I preordered the second book in the Under the Never Sky Trilogy and Amazon just wrote me a super enthusiastic email that I'm getting it on January 11, instead of January 15. Hello? I want it to stare on it sitting on my shelf now!!! Not that I could squeeze it in before next week, but...I want it!

Bout of Books 6.0 Day Two

Goals:

My goals this time? Reading? Not so much. I am actually very happy about my reading progress so far. What I really want to do this time, though, is interact with other bloggers more. I want to participate in challenges, comment on other blogs and most of all: start using Twitter!!!
So, my goal is to visit Twitter at least five times a day and to participate in as many Twitter Chats as I can. And for the reading part...the books I will try to get to are:

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2)Shadowhunters and Downworlders: A Mortal Instruments Reader

(Hehe-you get a theme here?)

But I don't want to pressure myself reading-wise. For me it's really about meeting new people!

Monday:

Hey everyone!
Here I am again, sucking at reading like I did yesterday :) But that's not too  bad, because my goal is to interact more with other bloggers and as for now, I've done quite a good job at that. For one, I visited Twitter three times yesterday and participated in the first Twitter chat! And today (Tuesday is almost over for me) I visited  Twitter four times which was my goal.
As far as reading goes I am pretty slow, but school practically doesn't leave me any free time to read. I am on page 120 of Clockwork Angel and really liking it so far and that's the most important thing for me!
Anyway, I think I'm going to throw my laptop out of my bed now and try to get a few more pages in :) To all of you others out there,
happy and successful reading!!!

Books/Pages I read today: 0/90
Books/Pages I've read in total: 0/90
