Top Ten Tough Reads

1) Perfect by Ellen Hopkins
This book was not only crazy and roller-coaster - like to read, it also left me thinking over my own life and my thoughts. It features such an important topic - I think every teen - boy and girl - should read this book. And adults, too, of course.
Perfect (Impulse, #2)

2) Sarah Dessen Books
Just Listen
I mean, you guys know I love Sarah Dessen. And anyone who has ever read a book by her knows they're not typical tough issue books. They do, however, often enough feature serious topics while still being amazingly positive. At the end of each of her books I always feel like everything will be good and okay eventually and that's why I love Dessen's novels so much.
(Lock and Key, Just Listen, The Truth About Forever, Someone Like You)

3) Impulse by Ellen Hopkins
Also very good, though not as strong message - wise as Perfect was, I'd say.
Impulse (Impulse, #1)

4) Dear Bully (Anthology)
Dear Bully: Seventy Authors Tell Their Stories
This book is perfection. Seriously, this is some kind of bible for everyone who has ever felt left out, ignored, played with or bullied. I have not read anything more empowering, I don't think.

5) Zoey Letting Go by Nora Price
This one has an interesting take and an - although expected pretty early - twist at the end that might surprise you. It's definitely different.

Sorry, guys. That's it already. I really only wanted to add the books that really mean something to me.

  1. I've only read one Dessen book... but yeah, I kinda liked how it took a serious subject and made you feel... but then made you feel hopeful at the end of the book. Looking forward to reading more by her!

    1. You should, you should! Except for That Summer, her debut, I loved all of the books I read by her. What Happened to Goodbye was really good, too, though, and a bit lighter than the ones I mentioned above :)

  2. Dear Bully sounds great. I remember seeing it when it first came out, but didn't pick it up. I'll have to see if I can snag it from the library. I love Sarah Dessen. Great list!

    1. Dear Bully was way better than I thought! I'm usually not one for short stories, but the ones in there were pretty much all real - life stories and they really made me feel stronger and more dedicated to stand up to people that are trying to make me feel bad!

  3. I love your list. I've read everything but Dear Bully and they're all books that are very close to my heart. I didn't put Just Listen on my list because though it did have a big impact on me and honestly changed my life, I didn't know if it would have the same effect on others.

    1. It definitely had an impact on me! I mean, the plot was a bit on the slow side for me, but I could relate to some parts of the story. It was like that window-theory everyone always talks about. That books are mirrors in some parts and windows into the life/situations of other people in other parts :) If...that still made any sense...

  4. I guess I have to read some Ellen Hopkins huh? I've seen her speak a few times and she is really interesting. Plus I borrowed one of her books but have yet to read it. I like that her books are so important to you.

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. You HAVE to read one of Hopkin's novels! I underestimated them SO much...you have no idea! I don't know if I'd be up for Crank etc. as I am terrified by even the synopsises of drug - books, but Impulse and Perfect were really extraordinary reads :)

  5. My list is short this week as well, I think I read more fluffy books than sad or tough books, actually.

I did add Impulse and Perfect to my TBR, though :)

    Here's my TTT post.

    Happy reading.

    1. Good thing! Ellen Hopkins seems to be all over the place this week, but her books are just simply amazing - you've got to pick one of them up sometime :) Also, a few months ago everything I wanted from contemporary was something light and fluffy, but as of right now, I find myself getting tired of that...those tough books do have the appeal that you just can't put them down after you've read them. Then again, when I'm really sad already, I always reach for a read that will make me laugh :D

    2. Yes, you're completely right, but I think I need to be in the mood to pick up a book I think will make me cry, you know? Just as I also have to be in the mood to read something fluffy and light :)

  6. I never heard for any of these but Dear Bully looks good, may have to try it. :)

    Happy reading!

    1. It's great - especially because it's an anthology and you don't have to read it all at once...although you probably will, since most of the stories are compelling, honest and moving!

  7. Wooo, Ellen Hopkins! I haven't read Perfect or Impulse, but I've loved the books of hers I HAVE read.

    1. Ah, Perfect and Impulse are the only books of hers that I have read - the other always sounded a bit too tough for my taste. Which ones have you read?

  8. I've never heard of Zoey Letting Go... I'm going to look it up on GR. I'm always excited to hear about a book I've somehow over looked... not like I need anything else to add to my TBR, but still! ha

    1. I can so relate on the TBR problem . The actual pile on my shelf is shrinking, but on Goodreads, there are like...600 books I "Want - to - read"...yeah, probably won't happen in this life :) Zoey Letting Go wasn't all that talked about anyway, it's a debut and I'll admit I hated how open the ending was. The story and the plot were really well thought - out, though.
