Bout of Books 5.0 - The Candy Challenge!

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

Hey guys! I'm so excited - I get to host my first. challenge. ever :)
And it bothers me a LOT that a mixture of my status as international blogger, stupid Amazon rules (in Germany) and my super-suspicious-when-it-comes-to-big-and-dangerous-internet-mom makes it pretty much impossible for me to combine a giveaway with this challenge :/
Anyway, to make this up to you it's a fairly easy challenge ;)

I don't know about you but I used to love eating and reading at the same time - I don't even know why. So for this challenge (also, because my rating system just screams candy) I'd like you to share either what's your favorite snack while reading - do you snack at all? Or do you - like me - sometimes try to eat (or drink) exactly what the characters in the story are having?

My reading-snack habits are...kind of weird:

Did you guys notice that Molly Weasley butters toast for Harry a LOT in those books? Yeah...that's why for YEARS I'd eat nothing but buttered toast whenever I was (re-)reading Harry Potter.

Or, a few years later when I read Libba Bray's Gemma Doyle Trilogy I'd have tons of cookies while reading. Because I just imagined people in that time period ate cookies all the time.

The whole snacking-while-reading thing stopped abruptly for me, though, when I poured hot chocolate (which - thank God! - wasn't that hot anymore!) all over my jeans and the book I was reading - Thirteen Reasons Why. You can still see the stain today and ever since that happened I try to eat after I put a safe distance between my books and food :)

But enough of my weird snacking habits - I want to know yours!

To participate in this challenge simply leave a comment down below - either to immediately tell everyone about your snacking - habits or to link us to a post on your blog :)

  1. I tend to eat a lot of chocolate digestive biscuits while reading. Either those, or grapes. I'll just take the bag and eat my way through it :-) Mostly I only drink water though for much similar reasons to why you no longer eat while reading!!

    1. Yeah...it gets messy - and hot beverages hurt like hell - I can tell you as much :) But sometimes that steaming cup of hot something can be tempting... :)

Ohhh you're are another european blogger :p. I'm french ! It's a good idea and I loved your answers. My answers are not as good or as funny though ^^.

  3. I'm the same as you! I always eat and drink while I'm reading! Always. Reading's just not the same without a mug of tea and some snacks. :)

I usually go for a steaming mug of tea or hot chocolate for drinks depending on the weather and biscuits, crisps, popcorn, chocolate or cakes for snacks. And I also eat lots of sweets!

I actually poured a mug of (hot) tea all over myself and my beanbag chair while I was reading a few weeks ago but funnily enough, it didn't put me off. :D

    Fun challenge! x

    1. :) I know exactlywhat you mean! When I'm reading, everything around me could explode and I wouldn't give it a second thought until I know how a story ends :) And I love hot drinks, too - especially in the winter time!

  4. I never eat while reading but I always drink, usually coffe or tea or hot chocolate. And yes I tend to spill them all over my book too.

The only books with which I ate where the Harry Potter books. And I would only eat Pasta Flora while reading them. But I guess that was mostly because I wouldn't stop reading them and I had to eat something. Funny thing is I did that while lying on my bedroom's carpet.

    1. Haha, once the fever hit me I never stopped reading them, either. It was bad - I'd carry them everywhere I went, at least two books of the series in case I finished one (again) and eating was definitely something I would NOT put the book down for :)

  5. It's not so much that I eat while reading, but I read while eating. I have always read during lunch, and I still take a book with me when I eat out alone. My favorite places to read and eat? Panera, Starbucks and IHOP. As much as I like to eat, I'm not much of a snacker, but I do love curling up with a good book and a hot cup of coffee, hot chocolate or tea. But now I just want to eat toast thanks to your post! Thanks for hosting a fun challenge!

    1. Ohh, that's like totally cool - reading at Starbucks! Or do I just find it cool because I live like...100 kilometers away from the next Starbucks?? Anyway, I have to say the fact that I just convinced a person in this world to eat toast really makes my day :) Toast rocks!

  6. I am totally a salty snacker. Yeah, I like sweets as much as the next girl, but salty and savory is where it's at!

My all time faves are popcorn and/or chips with queso. CHEEEEESE.

    1. Mhm...I'm pretty sure I'll find myself in the kitchen not long from now pouring cheese over anything I can find :)

    1. Oh, another popcorn fan! I've actually never considered popcorn because we never make it...we only ever buy some when we go to the movies or something - but I guess not-making-popcorn-at-home is a german thing. And very lame. I guess I'll try it sometime :)

  8. I'm a salty snacker as well. I like a slice of American cheese on my waffle. I only know of one other person who likes theirs the same way. @fromleft2write www.fromlefttowrite.com

    1. Guys - stop talking about cheese! It's 9.30 pm where I live, I had dinner hours ago and I. Can't. Indulge. In. Cheese-snacks now! Seriously - can't! But I agree - salty snacks are definitely missing on my list :)

      Delete
  9. I don't usually eat while reading - I have a phobia of getting grease stains or something saucy on the pages, call it OCD if you will - but I almost always have a coffee or glass of wine around. That sort of depends on my mood/the time of day. : )

Thanks for hosting the challenge - now I'm looking for my coffee!

    1. I used to be a coffee fan. Big time even! And then I noticed that I gulped it down like water - and couldn't sleep anymore and now I stay away from it. But coffee is a great drink-while-reading...*sigh*

  10. I eat (and snack) when I read but it isn't specific- I don't plan on it. I agree with Kate (above) I read while I eat. But if I am about to read a book from a series I love- I will buy some snacks because I know I will be there a while and I may forget to eat.

    1. Totally know what you mean! I love days when I can curl up under a blanket and never stop reading - not even for food :)

  11. One thing I love to eat while reading is cereal - DRY cereal! Oatmeal squares is one of my favourites. Cinnamony and sweet. :)

I also love salty snacks -- favourite being Cheetos. YUM!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh, I used to eat dry cereal when I was younger! Just not while reading - I pretended to cook meals for my dolls...whatever! It definitely is a great snack :)

  12. Depending on my mood and cravings, I could eat yogurt with berries and granola, cereal, leftovers, or one of my favorites, English muffins with melty peanut butter on them.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Mhm...all of that sounds amazing! I do the yogurt thing almost every day, not only as a reading snack, though. And if I could I'd totally eat a can of peanut butter every day. Like spoons of it. Just like that. I love it!

  13. I generally don't snack while reading, but when I get a hankering, I love to have a grape sugar free popsicle.

    1. You just made me so jealous! We don't have popsicles in Germany but I googled it a while back (yes. I totally am crazy like that) and man - those look fantastic!

  14. I snack while reading all the time. My #1 choice is Smartfood, which is a brand of popcorn coated with white cheddar cheese. It's completely addictive!

  15. Oh my goodness, these pictures are making my mouth water! I think if you're reading a book where food is featured highly it always gives you cravings. 16. I’ll be honest, I try never to eat while I’m reading, mostly because I don’t want to stain my precious books, but occasionally I do pick up a snack and it’s mostly fruit and cereal bars. What I do consume *A LOT* while I’m reading are hot drinks, tea, cappuccino, coffee in general. (I'm boring. :p)

    ReplyDelete

    1. You're absolutely not! Boring, I mean. And the hot drinks seem to come with the love of books and reading - I haven't heard of one reader who doesn't love hot beverages :)

  18. I love the buttered toast/Harry Potter thing, that's hilarious! I don't really eat that much while reading because a) it would be mindless eating and I'd just keep eating, and b) most of my books are library books and I'm afraid of spilling stuff/marking the pages. I've had a few books from the library with coffee stains and orange marks from people who were obviously eating cheesies while they read, haha. I do like candy sometimes while reading though...M&Ms are my favourite. :-)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Good point - I don't eat when I read library books, either! Oh, and I love M&Ms :)

  20. Great question! I honestly haven't paid much attention to what I eat whilst reading, but I have a feeling that that's all I'll be able to think about now. Who knows... maybe I'll lose weight because I'll realize how much crap I eat without realizing it. LOL

  21. I used to love to eat bread when listening to Hänsel and Gretel as a kid because of the whole breadcrumbs thing. Other than that, I don't really eat while reading because it'a just too difficult for me to manage without spilling things over the book. Soletti work, but only without something adding to drink...

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have never ate or drank the same things as the characters I was reading about. I drink lots of Diet Dr. Pepper while I read and snack on whatever I have around the house - usually vanilla wafers or honey wheat pretzels.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I eat and drink the usual while reading if I eat or read anything.

I tend to get really involved in the book and forget to eat.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I love when that happens - to me it almost always means the book is amazing from beginning to end!

      Delete
  24. Great question! I used to eat while reading, but not anymore. Firstly, because I don't want to stain my books, and secondly because when I get into a book I forget to actually eat. IF I do have a snack while reading, it is usually some pieces of chocolate. Nothing can ever trump chocolate, right?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah...the stains are annoying! But I really only forget aout food if the book totally draws me in :)

  25. I have never been a snacker while reading. First I am one hundred percent focused on what I am reading and couldn't possibly do anything else at the same time. Second it is messy and I don't want myself of the book messy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I know what you mean - it's super annoying when you have to stop reading because you need to clean something up :)

      Delete
  26. I try to stay away from eating while I read, or it would be harder to stop! But when I do need a snack and a break, I usually have some trail mix (my own assortment) or some fresh fruit, especially strawberries!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I also love to drink hot chocolate when I'm reading! Although, and this is really weird, I've gotten into a habit of, when I'm reading during lunch time or breakfast or something, when I'm home alone, to making eggs. My mom has the recipe holder with little weighted strings on either side to hold cookbooks. So I just put my book there and eat my eggs and toast! It works really well, because I can eat a two-handed meal and not starve myself while all I do is read, hahah. (:

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Haha, I can totally picture myself doing that, too! 'd basically do everything to keep reading :)

  33. I don't usually eat when I read, but when I do I usually like snacky foods. My favorite is definitely Twizzlers, because you don't have to worry so much about spilling them all over the floor, and they don't get your fingers messy when you try to turn the page!

  35. I'm always snacking/eating while I'm reading (although I did drop a book in melted cheese whiz once...it's still stained yellow). I prefer something easy to snack on that I can grab and munch without looking away from my book, like chips, M&M's, grapes, crackers, things like that. 55. I had never thought about eating what characters are eating, though every time I have them I think about Captain Cully telling Schmendrick to "have a taco" in The Last Unicorn. It's so random and sort of anachronistic. As a writer, I'm uncomfortable if my characters aren't eating and drinking regularly. During 24-hour read-a-thons, I seem to end up eating holiday candy. For week-long read-a-thons, I eat what I usually eat, but while reading. Lately, the food of choice has been "on a pita." (PB&J-on a pita. Turkey and cheese-on a pita. Eggs and potatoes-on a pita.) The non-book-friendly recent snack? Jalapeno Cheetos. Luckily, I'm reading mostly via Kindle Cloud Reader (aka on my PC). Additionally, pickles and vodka have been the house cocktail. Tasty. Makes me want to break out some Pushkin.
