Review: Glitch by Heather Anastasiu

Glitch (Glitch, #1)

Goodreads summary:

In the Community, there is no more pain or war. Implanted computer chips have wiped humanity clean of destructive emotions, and thoughts are replaced by a feed from the Link network.
When Zoe starts to malfunction (or “glitch”), she suddenly begins having her own thoughts, feelings, and identity. Any anomalies must be immediately reported and repaired, but Zoe has a secret so dark it will mean certain deactivation if she is caught: her glitches have given her uncontrollable telekinetic powers.
As Zoe struggles to control her abilities and stay hidden, she meets other glitchers including Max, who can disguise his appearance, and Adrien, who has visions of the future. Both boys introduce Zoe to feelings that are entirely new. Together, this growing band of glitchers must find a way to free themselves from the controlling hands of the Community before they’re caught and deactivated, or worse.

LONG STORY SHORT:

This was a very good book. I read some reviews that suggested otherwise and I wouldn't put this on the same level with Divergent or Delirium, but it certainly was very enjoyable, suspenseful, gripping, interesting and sometimes even funny. And it made me think. Sometimes I found that there was a bit too much twisting and turning but the ending made up for that with its awesomeness.

REVIEW:

Glitch was one of the first NetGalley books that I got and I requested it back when I thought dystopia could be my new favorite genre. Well... I'm not so sure about that anymore which made me hesitate to finally read Glitch but now I'm really glad I did.

What I liked most about Glitch was probably the ending because I'm still thinking about it and I want to know how things turn out for Zoe and everyone else sooo badly. Glitch didn't exactly end on a cliffhanger - well it did, but the book itself had a satisfying ending so that's fine.

Other elements of Glitch that I loved? The beginning, because it raised my interest for Zoe's world immediately - I got through the first fifty pages like nothing. The plot itself was very cleverly done, I would say. Just when I felt like I was settling into the book there was the first big event that I needed to know the ending of. Then, when I thought things would quiet down for a while, there were new characters to get to know, romance to figure out - you get the gist.
Glitch is a book that won't let those slow, boring moments happen to you.

Apart from that, I liked that there was only a handful of characters that really mattered and that we got to know better. That made the story easy to understand. The author also did a fantastic job creating the main character, Zoe, and describing her first experiences with emotions and free thinking. The boys in this book? Woah, in the end I didn't know what or whom to believe anymore! Right now, though, I have a clear favorite!

On the downside, sometimes the plot was a bit too twisted for me. You know that point when you are like "I can't believe this just happened!!!" - I think it's very close to the moment when you think "Okay, this is completely unrealistic". Very close to the end I think the author crossed that line. I just started to find it annoying, though, when that epic ending came and here I am now desperately waiting for the sequel of a book that has just come out today :)

    1. I was a bit afraid because f the negative reviews too and - as I said - it's probably not something for the huge dystopian fans or people who expect something big like Divergent, The Hunger Games, Delirium etc.
It's a bit different, but still an enjoyable read, I guess :)

    1. True! There are only very few books I'd compare with Divergent, that book just knocked me off my seat. But Glitch is nice, too :)
